A.O. Neville
A.O. Neville is one of the most controversial characters in the history of the community of the Western Australian government concerning Aboriginals. He is known to the Australia as “Mr Devil” or just a mere public servant doing his job as the chief protector of the Aboriginals in Western Australia in 1915. He is one of the most influential administrators of Aborigines in Australian history. There are so many debates taking place abut his policies, his theories and most importantly, his reasoning.
Mr Neville’s Life
Auber Octavius Neville (1875-1954), a public servant, was born on 20 October 1875 at Ford, Northumberland, England. He was the son of Rev. Hastings Mackelean Neville, an Anglican clergyman, and his mother was Elizabeth Sophia, née Cotton. Neville seemed destined for a career in banking. In 1897 he went to Western Australia where his brother was taking law. There he soon found a job as a records clerk in the Department of Works for the civil service.
