The most important playwright of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He wrote, among other things, thirty-seven plays. One of these plays was named, Love’s Labour Lost. It was published in 1598. This play is considered a comedy and its subject is love. Most of Shakespeare’s early work, like this one, dealt with love, marriage and happiness. While the ending is a happy one, what makes this play different is this love story does not end up with anyone getting married.
The plot of the story revolves around King Ferdinand of Navarre, his court, including the following lords, Biron, Dumain and Longaville. The King decides that they all need to desert their world for three years to search for knowledge and to think about the meaning of life. It is decided that in addition, they all are going to swear off women. It is ironic that very soon after they all swear off women, each one of them falls in love with a different woman.
