Objective: Based on the article as well material from the course, discuss the arguments both for and against the use of Social Programs as a means of combating poverty. Eradicating poverty, or at least dramatically reducing its prevalence, has become one of the nation’s greatest concerns. It has long been recognized that with poverty comes a whole host of social problems, including disease, crime, drug use, etc., that can all be drastically reduced if poverty is battled effectively. In an effort to conquer these social problems, social programs have been developed in the hopes that they would aid the poor and reduce the prevalence and severity of poverty in America. It can be argued quite convincingly, however, that these programs have not been successful in these efforts. “The eventual public perception that antipoverty programs had failed, especially in dealing with the problems of urban blacks, has contributed much to growing pessimism about lack of progress and the need for a new solution” (Iceland 52).
