Until recent times, there has been prejudice towards women in music. Despite this, throughout all ages there have been women composers. Women have made it a point to prosper no matter how much they are suppressed. Among these women is Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade. She was a French composer and pianist and one of the most successful composers of her time. Her sweet salon music and effortless piano compositions won over many fans. She was one of the few women whose success was truly recognized despite the social barriers between men and women during the nineteenth century.
Cécile Chaminade was born on August 8, 1857. She began playing the piano when she was eight years old. Even though her mother was the one to teach her piano, her father disapproved of her musical education. She studied with great composers like Félix Le Couppey, Savart, Martin Marsick and Benjamin Godard. Chaminade played her first composition when she was eighteen.
