I. The Origin of the Crisis:
The East Asian Financial Crisis started in July 1997 in Thailand and South Korea when the company Kia Motors financially collapsed. This crisis spread to the other East Asian countries as Singapore, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. These 8 countries were known as the “Asian Tigers” as they have created what’s known as the “Asian Miracle” right before this crisis began. This crisis affected currencies, stock markets, and other asset prices in the affected Asian countries. For some noted reasons this Asian Crisis is also known as the “IMF Crisis” as will be stated later in this paper.
II. The Asian Economic Miracle:
Preceding the crisis, East Asian countries were working hard to develop themselves. They focused on improving education at all levels in order to improve productivity. They also focused on producing goods to be exported to highly-industrialized countries. They maintained high interest rates to attract foreign investors looking for a high rate of return.
