Plan B Under Attack On August 24, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved the nonprescription sale of the morning-after pill, commercially known as Plan B, to women 18 years of age or older. Girls 17 and younger will be able to purchase the pill with a prescription. This has become a sociological issue because of its social implications as it has become a marker of our time. It illuminates the contestable nature of culture; the battle between public and private; the ways that moral battles are disguised as political. Some would even say the ability to deter or prevent pregnancy provides a level of control over our lives that dehumanizes us. (Kachroo, Sumesh [2007]) To understand the controversy over Plan B, one should become familiar with what it is and how it works. Plan B is two small pills made from a synthetic hormone progestin, the same ingredient in many forms of oral birth control.
