The End of Apathy: Examining American Labor Conditions The low wage worker is possibly the most ignored majority in American history. For as many years as African Americans struggled for Civil Rights and women petitioned the right to vote, there have been low paid, hardworking citizens keeping their mouths shut. Today, the code of silence is breaking for the underpaid maid, the overtired waitress, and the world-weary cashier. The novel Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich gives the more privileged public a glimpse at what really goes on at the local supermarket, and how the people who work for the satisfaction of the general public are often the ones the most scorned by it. The author breaks open the truth about corporate empathy and the sad conditions many of the most deserving of the American public are living in. Ehrenreich’s experiment in minimum wage survival can teach the American people one major lesson; the system is dearly in need of change.
