Relating to the public, however essential to an organization, does not fully describe the functions of public relations. Prior to the reading of this week’s course material, this writer thought of public relations as only a small part of marketing; having to do with writing press releases, throwing parties to launch new products, and putting a positive spin on bad publicity. Now it is clear that the reverse is true, marketing is part of the much broader public relations world. It is also understood that were marketing relates to a product or service, public relations involves the whole organization (Seitel, 2004).
