There are two types of Haemophilia, Haemophilia A and Haemophilia B. Haemophilia A or classic Haemophilia is when there is a deficiency of the clotting factor VIII it is the most common of the two forms occurring in 90% of cases. The other form of Haemophilia is Haemophilia B otherwise known as Christmas disease it is when there is a deficiency of clotting factor VI. Our son has Haemophilia A. Haemophilia is a hereditary condition. It affects more males than females. Haemophilia affects 1,600 Australians. Haemophilia is mainly a male disorder because the haemophilia gene is carried on the X chromosome and because it is a recessive disorder all X chromosome need to have the gene. Women have to X chromosomes, which means that need to have a haemophilia gene on both chromosomes unlike with men who only need one haemophilia gene. Many female carriers appear to be unaffected by the disease but some may have a reduced factor VII levels.
