Chrysanthemums - John Steinbeck Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In John Steinbeck’s “the Chrysanthemums,” Steinbeck uses Elisa Allen’s flowers as a symbol of what is missing in her life. The chrysanthemums represent her lack of companionship, and sexuality. Elisa lives a lonely life, in a valley with no sunshine, as the ‘fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and the rest of the world.” (324) And in her valley she sits behind a chain fence that represents her separation from her husband, Henry, and gardens her chrysanthemums. Yellow chrysanthemums mean slighted love or a man’s lack of understanding in love. When Henry says, “Some of those yellow chrysanthemums you had this year were ten inches across,” (325) it expresses the distance in their relationship, and his ignorance of it. She and her flowers are isolated from her husband. He doesn’t see Elisa as the nurturer of the yellow and white chrysanthemums, instead he sees her as strong farm hands that she could use to ‘work out in the orchid and raise some apples that big” (325).
