Democracy takes its roots from the Greek word �demos� meaning people. The opening line of the prestigious American Constitution is �We the people of the United States.� Democracy has been clich�d endlessly as �For the people, by the people.� One can argue that within the midst of these phrases the real meaning behind these very substantial words has disappeared. Democracy and the people- the citizens of the United States- should be working simultaneously with one another and thus should not be considered two separate entities. Simply stated, each depends on the other. The concept of democracy requires that people govern themselves, although, the ways in which people in a democracy �should� govern can be argued. The concept of �pure democracy� states that every person should participate in all matters of the government, all of the time �Such a form could hardly be expected to function efficiently in a nation of continental proportions with millions of citizens,� states Benjamin Barber in his book �Strong Democracy� (Barber, 130).
