Enormous Radio by John Cheever Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In The Enormous Radio, John Cheever exposes many hidden truths about life in 1950’s suburbia. While the story appears to be about a very average couple who come across an interesting radio, we see hidden behind this almost magical story a much darker tale. In the story Cheever shows man’s need for an outlet, some way to escape from his own life so that he may forget his own miseries and skeletons. Within The Enormous Radio, it is this theme of escape that I found most enlightening and true to the nature of man. The story begins by telling the reader that the Westcotts were “the kind of people who seem to strike that satisfactory average of income, endeavor, and respectability that is reached by the statistical reports in college alumni bulletins.”(250). Yet while this couple appeared to be the model for 1950’s normality, we see that they differed from their peers only in their great interest of music. Because of their shared awareness of serious music, Mr. Westcott decides to purchase a large radio for Mrs. Westcott to listen to while she is at home. How......
