The study area is the province of Eastern Samar, located in the Philippine easternmost island of Samar, between Luzon in the north, and Mindanao in the south. This province is well-known in the Philippines not only for tourism and its natural wonders but also for the acuteness of environmental problems it faces. Amongst them, five are especially critical: Coastal erosion and littoral sedimentation. Samar coasts are subject to intensive erosion due to recurrent typhoons and to more intermittent storm surges and tidal waves. The southern part of the province, especially the Guiuan peninsula, is also affected by sedimentation processes linked to nickel mining industry; Economical, social and physical vulnerability to climate hazards, especially typhoons that regularly sweep the western Pacific, storm surges and tidal waves. The economy of the province is highly dependant upon coconut production and exportation as well as on fishing activities.
