The Human Papillomavirus April 24, 2007 The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. Though the majority of those infected will never have symptoms or even be aware of the infection, annually about 4800 American women die from cervical cancer caused by the virus (Carter, 2001). There is a vaccine for the virus, and treatment for the infection is almost always successful, but the shear volume of infections and the lack of outward symptoms make understanding this virus very important. The word �papilloma� is the medical term for a skin legion, or �wart.� Hence HPV is the human wart virus. Although HPV had long been known as the cause of subcutaneous warts, it wasn�t until the late 1970�s that German researchers discovered the link between cervical cancer and HPV. In their research the Germans realized that the rate of cervical cancer was low in nuns and high among prostitutes and women who were married to men whose first wives had died of cervical cancer, which led them to look for an STD as the cancer ag......
