�Troubled Waters� The African American Church/ North Alabama Conference of the UMC The Gospel of John tells the story of Jesus going to Jerusalem during the time of a Jewish feast. This scene is centered around a pool that is called, Bethesda. This pool had five porches. The blind, withered, and other impotent people were on the porches waiting for the moving of the water. It is noted that when the season was right an angel would come down and �trouble� the water. Whoever was the first to enter the pool after the water was troubled would be healed, made whole. Amongst all the people, Jesus spotted a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years. Jesus approached the man and asked him a seemingly ridiculous question. Jesus asked, �Wilt thou be made whole?� The man�s response also appears rather odd--a simple yes or no would have sufficed. The man told Jesus how challenging and unfair this process was for him. �I don�t have any help and when I think my time has come, someone gets in front of me.� It is difficult to tell Jesus� mood at this point.
