Since, its discovery on November 19, 1493 Puerto Rico has been the only Spanish colony in the Americas that never gained its independence. This tiny island located at the north east of the Caribbean Sea has a history that is rich and unique but nevertheless intermingles with that of all of the Caribbean due to its colonial past. For over four centuries Puerto Rico was under Spanish colonial rule then for a brief moment between 1860 and 1898 witnessed a pro-independence rebellion, colonial reform, the establishment of the first national political parties, the abolition of slavery, and a short-lived experiment in autonomy under Spanish rule (1). However, due to geopolitical matter and decaying power of the �mother country� (Spain) during the start of the 19th century and emergence of the United States as a new colonial power had placed Puerto Rico in the center stage in the Caribbean.
