Cystic Fibrosis You might ask, what in the world is �Cystic Fibrosis?� Unfortunately, this disease does not get the publicity that other diseases get, although it should because �Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide).� (cff.org) Cystic Fibrosis can be in many cases a fatal disease since it affects the glandular cells which secrete mucus, sweat, saliva, and digestive enzymes. These secretions are meant to be protective lubricants, however, the victims of this disease suffer from clogged pathways, ducts, and tubes making it hard to breathe and lead a normal lifestyle. Before addressing the symptoms of this disease, it is important to know what causes Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Since it is a hereditary disease, it is caused by an affected recessive gene inherited from both of the child�s parents.
