While I was searching for a non-Western, small-scale society, I came across the Turkana tribe. The Turkana tribe is one of the remaining societies that carry on the nomadic pastoral lifestyle. Their ppopulation is between 250,000 and 340,000, and their spoken language is the Easter Niolitic Turkana. Seventy percent of the Turkan population is nomads. They populate Turkanaland in Northwest Kenya, which is an arid and scorching territory neighboring Lake Turkana in the east. South of Turkana resides the Pokot, Rendille, and Samburu tribes. The Turkana people are Kenya's third biggest tribe; in addition they are also the country's second-biggest tribe of pastoralists, after the Maasai tribe. Turkana�s climate is very hot and covered in dust through the entire year. Through the entire year of scorching heat, famine and lack of water are very ordinary and difficult to put up with. These terrible droughts destroy most of the turkan�s crops, cattle, making their standard of living a hard place to survive.
