In the book, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Beals, the author describes what her reactions and thoughts are to the racial hatred and discrimination she and eight other African-American teenagers received in Little Rock, Arkansas during the integration period in 1957. This book is about a young African-American fifteen-year old girl, Melba, who struggles in high school when she decides to integrate into a white school. Throughout high school years, Melba and her friends suffer racism and discrimination from white students and teachers. Melba’s journey into integration teaches her the real meaning of becoming a warrior.
The beginning of the book explains how Melba integrated herself into Central High School. In the year of 1954, the court ruled the case Brown vs. The Board of Education that schools needed to integrate and provide equal education for all people and it was unconstitutional for the state to deny certain citizen this opportunity.
