Art of the Spanish Golden Age The Spanish Golden Age refers to a period in Spain between the 15th and 17th centuries defined by the counter-reformation of the Catholic church, and a flourishing of the fine arts. During this age, many influences from the Italian renaissance reached Spain. In 1577, El Greco, who was one of the most prolific painters in Italy, moved to Toledo in southern Spain, and brought with him a style based on emotion, with vibrant colors and brushwork. Caravaggio was also a significant influence, with his use of dramatic tenebrism and sense of emotionally charged realism. As the counter-reformation of the church gained momentum due to the conflicts between the Catholic and Protestant churches, the subject matter of art produced in the country became heavily religious in nature, but still maintained a focus on realism in the figures. This is the historical backdrop which ties together the collection of six oil paintings in gallery 215 at the Art Institute of Chicago.
