Andrew Hall, MGMT 122 - Section 232 Case Analysis September 6, 2007 Synopsis Thomas Chan, the vice-president of software engineering at Advanced Photonics Ltd., is having a problem with retention. He is specifically dealing with the decision of quitting by Suzanne Chalmers. She is one of APL�s �top talents� in the engineering of the software that directs fiber-optic light through APL�s routers. She has been working there for four years, and is a millionaire. Chalmers requests a private meeting with Chan, and Chan suspects she is going to quit. The meeting takes place, and goes just as Thomas Chan expects. Once she explains how she wants to leave, Chan gives a number of offers to her to entice her to stay. The last offer is that of a higher salary and more share options. Chalmers agrees to consider the offer, but 2 days later Chan receives the resignation letter. Months later, Chan learns that she joined a �start-up software firm in the area�.
