MBA 501 – Forces Influencing Business in the 21st Century Dr. Mike Compson September 24, 2007 Executive Summary Monetary Policy is the regulation of the money supply and interest rates by a central bank, such as the Federal Reserve Board in the U.S., in order to control inflation stabilize currency. Monetary policy is one the two ways the government can impact the economy. By influencing the effective cost of money, the Federal Reserve can affect the amount of money that is spent by consumers and businesses. Monetary Policy The point of implementing policy through raising or lowering interest rates is to affect people and firms' demand for goods and services. This paper discusses how policy actions affect real interest rates, which in turn affect demand and ultimately output, employment, and inflation.
