INTRODUCTION According to Ball (2000: 95) Political parties can be defined by their main aim that is, they seek political power either singly or in co-operation with other political parties. Nwabuzor Mueller in their book Introduction to Political science for African students state that political parties are varied groups that provide labels under which candidates seek election for government office. Edwin M. Coulter in his book Principles of Politics states that a classic definition of a political party would note that it is a group of citizens within a nation or state who are united in their general agreement about basic ideas about how that society should function. All the above definitions agree on one similarity of political parties which is that they seek to gain control of governments by using the political process and that all political parties should have some form of organisational structure, consistent membership and some kind of regular process of meeting and discussing so that ideas can remain consistent throughout the whole party structure.
