Relationships are based upon and built upon many factors, with different things being more important to certain people. As with most things, a relationship needs to be worked on, it has to be maintained, or it will dissolve, with possibly devastating affects on one or both members of the couple.
Theories of relationship formation mostly hold somewhere that people are motivated to form a relationship out of self-interest, as they want something that a relationship can provide. As both parties will want things, a ‘give-and-take’ relationship must exist, and this is known as exchange. Homans developed social exchange theory in 1961, and he liked to think of his theory as being ‘brutally honest and provocative’, knowing that most people wouldn’t like to think of themselves in the way that he describes. He says that all human relationships are like business transactions, with the merchants (people), out of self-interest, are trying to get the best deal and make a profit.
