Joseph Plumb Martin was born in western Massachusetts on November 21, 1760. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, who published an account of his experiences as a soldier in the 8th Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Army in 1830. When the war started in 1775, many of his peers and associates had joined the army, so Martin was compelled to enlist himself too. Military recruiters were taking whoever they could. Technically, boys under sixteen were not suitable to recruit, inspite of that, army recruited them as they were the easiest to train, with little property, no marital ties and romantic visions of glory. Also, due to the need to recruit more soldiers, Continental Congress sanctioned the �new levies� of troops, who were to serve for 6 months which gave Martin some encouragement to join the army. Thus, despite the displeasure of his grandparents, Martin enlisted in for six months as a private in the Connecticut state troops at the age of 16. During the winter of 1776, when the cold weather set in, Martin describes how he had to endure the hardships without provisions or clot......
