�War, what is it good for?� Medical advancement. Economic growth. Social Change. The role of the first and second word wars in the feminist movement is well known. The Great War 1914-1918 was significant in securing the votes for women whilst the social change after the Second World War contributed to the movement not only directly but also indirectly with the liberation of women in the 196os. However, the link between women and war stems from before the twentieth century. The role of Florence Nightingale, a self proclaimed non-supporter of the feminist movement, in the Crimea helped lay the foundations for this unusual alliance. Florence called the suffrage movement this �jargon about the rights of women� a view which unknowingly enabled her to be so useful to the movement. Florence did not view the world as a battle between class, religion or gender but one for that which is right. She concluded her �Notes on Nursing� �do the thing that is it good whether it is suitable for a women or not.�* The volume sold through three editions despite its initial high cost of five shillings ......
