�� Oliver Twist Essay Oliver Twist was written in 1843 by Charles Dickens. The book is about a young orphan who goes through many tough events in his life involving crime, living in a workhouse and even being shot! Dickens wrote the novel because it was a close example to the way he used to live as a young boy forced into labour. He also wrote it to shock the upper class on how the lower class were being treated. He hoped by doing so that something would be done about this in the future. There are for main themes in the book: The failure of charity; individualism; purity in a corrupt city and motives. The areas which the lower class lived were shocking. When Oliver taken through the streets of London by The Dodger Dickens describes them using words like: �dirtier�, �wretched�, �muddy� and �filthy�. This detailed descriptive text is designed to shock the upper class readers and let them know the terrible conditions that the lower class live in and hope they will do something about them.
