Background
AIDS is acquired immune deficiency syndrome, the final stage of the disease caused by HIV, human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a rapidly mutating retrovirus that attacks the T4 or T helper cells of the victims’ immune system leaving them vulnerable to malignancies and infections. Although the immune system reproduces millions of these cells daily, HIV kills them faster than they can be produced. The definition of AIDS has changed over time, somewhat, as more knowledge has been acquired. In general, it is the stage of the virus when the T4 count goes below 200, when a normal count should be 1000. In 1981, the first cases of an unusual immune system disease were first identified among gay men, women and intravenous drug users. By 1982 AIDS was defined for the first time. In 1983, the virus is isolated and named HIV and modes of transmission were identified as by blood, mother-to-child, and sexual intercourse.
