Harvey Mansfield defines ‘manliness’ as the “confidence of manly men and their ability to command” which subsequently gives him “independence from others”. This idea is culturally understood through tradition and subsequently, the media. Of course tradition must begin somewhere and since we live among these norms, one might say that this understanding is in fact the essence of ‘manliness’. As we are limited by language and it’s implications, ‘manliness’ doesn’t exist outside of these terms. The idea of ‘manliness’ is a socially constructed one that when brought to mind, invokes the likeness of the Marlborough Man or James Bond or a military soldier exemplifying qualities of strength and confidence and leadership. But ultimately, when we wash away the cultural images, we are left with mere language that has been arbitrarily prescribed to an ideal.
