Good, Evil, and Mythology in Lord of the Flies Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Nearly all of the major characters in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies have a Greek god or goddess who relates to his personality and actions. Though it was not the intention, many parallels of good and evil to the characters can be found in ancient Greek mythology.
As Ralph is elected as the leader of the boys he rises to a similar role as Cronus, the ruler of his fellow Titans and the gods. Because Ralph is a “bigun,” he is similar to a Titan and must guard the “littluns,” or the gods, just as Cronus did. Ralph attempts to provide a suitable setting that models the ethics of the boys’ original society. Eventually, Zeus, a son of Cronus and therefore a god, overthrows Cronus. This is similar to, in Lord of the Flies, when Jack removes Ralph from power. Though Jack is not younger or less powerful than Ralph as Zeus is, this relationship still carries connections to the original Greek myth. Though Jack claims Ralph is “not a proper chief” his drive for impeaching Ralph is his craving for power, similar to Zeus’ (Golding 126).
