Hunger, Satiety, and Eating Behavior Being hungry and being able to eat and become satisfied are often behaviors that humans take for granted. It seems like a simple process, but in fact eating and hunger-satiety is a very complex homeostatic system that is used to create energy in the body and monitor intake of foodstuffs. There are many different areas of the human body that contribute to this ongoing process of hunger and satiety that works to help regulate what and how much is eaten. Humans have this internal process that was designed to maintain a certain level of energy and ability to create energy from stored nutrients, but humans are very complex animals and also have other things that motivate them to eat such as time, culture, anticipated pleasure, and sensory-specific satiety. In this paper I will discuss the homeostatic process associated with hunger and satiety, but also the effects of ignoring or disregarding hunger-satiety signals and other extrinsic influences on eating behavior.
