Witches in the tragic play Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Act One Scene one Shakespeare presents the witches as three evil and supernatural women with a mission in mind. The witches play a very important role in this play, despite the fact that they only appear in a few scenes but Shakespeare’s portrayal of the witches makes them principal part of this tragedy. In the seventeenth century, when this play was written, a witch hunt craze abounded throughout Britain, Europe and America. ‘The Lowestoft Trial’, held in 1662, and ‘The Suffolk Trails’, in 1665, are but two of hundreds of witch trails which took place in England. The ‘Salem Witch Hunt’ in 1692 is a renowned tail held in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. Trails were held to decide the innocence but most times the guilt of people, predominantly women, accused of being witches and it is believed thousands either died in custody or if they refused to ‘confess’ were executed.
