Throughout the 1920s, men and women saw unlimited opportunities in the century to come. During that generation, everyone lived their lives without a care in the world and the rich and famous lived their lives without any boundaries. People hid their true identity behind disguises from regular society so no one was who they say they are. This is the exact lifestyle that the “Great” Jay Gatsby lived by. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”, James Gatz or more commonly known as Jay Gatsby is personified with the ideals of the American Dream. He, like many others, dreamt of a luxurious life of wealth, power and status. Along with his personal drive for his dreams, his main motivation to achieve them was Daisy Buchanan. There was definitely love for her in his heart but Gatsby was more enticed by the idea of adding the “Golden Girl”, a notion that he idealized about Daisy, to his vast pool of goals. By revolving his novel around the morally ambiguous Jay Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald shows that Gatsby’s true identity was always more valuable than his self-made persona.
