The “Good Old Days” and Today Stephanie Coontz wrote the book “The Way We Never Were” to compare the so-called “traditional family” of the past, to the modern day families that believe that the problems of today are worse than ever. Many families of today have set in their mind that family life was better and more structured in the past, but Stephanie Coontz presented her readers with insight on the families of the 1900s to show that many of the problems today were occurring back then as well. “The Way We Never Were” presents myths that people believe about families of the pasts and compares them to families of today, and using families, school, and the easy image of self-reliance, it will be shown that there is no such “golden age” that people want to believe existed because problems have always been present. In “The Way We Never Were” the issue of women and children in the “traditional” two-parent family did not experience any economic or health problems.
