The Importance of Women�s Work in Canada during the Great Depression In the decade before the start of the Second World War, Canada, as well as many other countries in North America and Europe experienced an economic depression. �No country except for the U.S.A. was hit as hard by the Depression as Canada was in the thirties, and economic recovery here was among the most belated in the world. Between 1929 and 1933 the country�s gross national expenditure dropped 42 per cent, exports of goods and services fell 50 per cent, and investment in durable assets plummeted 82 per cent.� The Great Depression affected Canada from 1930 to 1939 and was ended by the Second World War, the most affected group in Canada were the working class male breadwinners and their families. Many male breadwinners lost their jobs or suffered severe wage reduction and had to rely on government relief which was greatly inadequate to support a family during the depression. To say the least this would have been a very distressing time for Canadians. So what did women do when they their household male breadwinner ......
