In the essay “How ‘Great’ was Alexander?” the questions answered by the author were why Alexander III of Macedon was called “Great” and did he deserve to be called “Great.” The author, Ian Worthington, used facts and impressions for his arguments. He stated that there was very little accurate information on Alexander the Great; therefore, most of the information on him was determined based on either which point of view was taken or what aspect of his life was being analyzed. Worthington’s thesis statement was “The aims of this [selection] are to trace some reasons for questioning the greatness of Alexander as is reflected in his epithet, and to add potential evidence dealing with the attitude of the Macedonians, Alexander’s own people, in their king’s absence.” Worthington was very passionate about his feelings that Alexander was not a “Great” king and that all of Alexander’s military accomplishments are not entirely accurate and many were to sooth his ego.
