The Clash of Civilizations
The clash of civilizations is a theory proposed by Samuel P Huntington. Huntington is a political scientist and first published this theory in an article written in1993 for the influential American journal Foreign Affairs. In his book Huntington is not trying to understand the world, he is attempting to influence the major governments of the world to change it. It may be seen as a warning to the west as they ride their high horse as the world’s dominant power since the collapse of the soviet empire. The book warns the west of the other growing civilizations in the world and the threat to the west’s dominance and as such the threat to world peace. Huntington constantly relates to the threat posed by China and the Islamic civilisations as the main culprits. Huntington believes that people’s cultural and religious identities will be the primary source of conflict in the post-Cold War period.
