Broken Lamps and Nightmares: The Identity Crisis of the discerning “Tonto”
Sherman Alexie’s short story “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” is the short and somewhat tragic story of a young man undergoing an identity crisis. I say ‘identity “crisis”’ because his “identity” appears to be creating a “condition of instability or danger, as in social affairs, leading to a decisive change.” (dictionary.com) And I say “discerning” because he seems to have a very high level of understanding of most things; he’s observant, and perceptive, and yet has trouble fitting in.
Of the two traits I’ve just listed, I want to focus more on the “identity crisis” than the intelligence, but I felt it bears mentioning, as it’s interesting how someone who can so seemingly accurately and effortlessly depict the thoughts and emotions of people he’s just met would have so many social problems. “He wasn’t ugly,” he narrates, “just misplaced and marked by loneliness.
