• Purple is the symbol of royalty and wealth. • Purple represents wisdom and spiritually. The book follows the life of Celie, a young black girl growing up in the early 1900’s. It is the moving tale of a young black girl born into a male-dominated world, and tells the story of her gradual loss of identity followed by her defiance in reclaiming the life she lost. The story follows two sisters one a missionary in Africa and the other a child wife living in the South who sustain their loyalty to and trust in each other across time, distance, and silence. The book begins in the winter of 1909; Celie 14 Celie tells God that she has been raped by her father and that she is pregnant for the second time with his child. Celie’s mother is quite ill and after cursing Celie, dies, leaving Celie alone to face her father. Celie then turns her attention to protecting her sister, Nettie, from her father’s sexual advances. Celie soon marries Mr. _______ (later called Albert) after her father strikes a bargain with the older widower, and Celie finds herself in a loveless marriage, car......
