� Purple is the symbol of royalty and wealth. � Purple represents wisdom and spiritually. The book follows the life of Celie, a young black girl growing up in the early 1900�s. It is the moving tale of a young black girl born into a male-dominated world, and tells the story of her gradual loss of identity followed by her defiance in reclaiming the life she lost. The story follows two sisters one a missionary in Africa and the other a child wife living in the South who sustain their loyalty to and trust in each other across time, distance, and silence. The book begins in the winter of 1909; Celie 14 Celie tells God that she has been raped by her father and that she is pregnant for the second time with his child. Celie�s mother is quite ill and after cursing Celie, dies, leaving Celie alone to face her father. Celie then turns her attention to protecting her sister, Nettie, from her father�s sexual advances.
