In 1908, Converse Rubber Co. was founded by Marquis M. Converse. Converse had experience in this line of work, having been a manager of Beacon Falls Rubber Shoe Co, a department store. After just two years, Converse Rubber Co. was producing 4,000 pairs of boots and rubbers daily.
In 1917, Converse introduced one of the first basketball shoes ever, the canvas “All Star.” This shoe was a huge success in the basketball world. By 1929, though, the company fell into bankruptcy. Throughout the years, the Converse Rubber Co. has been purchased by many groups and companies.
For 20 years, the sale of converse was steady. Then, during World War II, sales rose again. In the year of 1966, almost 80% of the sneakers bought were Converse shoes. It is believed that Converse shoes reached the height of their popularity in 1969. In the 1970’s, though, the popularity started to decline. Around this time, the company sign a basketball player named Latrell Sprewell as an endorser. Sprewell was later dropped for trying to choke his coach during a practice.
