Larkins poetry has been criticised for being excessively pessimistic. Is it and does it matter? Discuss with reference to a range of poems. Larkin’s poetry might be pessimistic, unsympathetic and disheartening. However it can be argued that it seems to question the values and precedence of society, who have been ensnared by the dangerous obsessions of consumerism, technology and industrialisation. In post-war Britain there was a plethora of “rhetorical and neo-romantic poems”, and Larkin was a breath of fresh air bringing in his novel understated style which was clear and witty. His poems found sustenance in objects of daily life and the complexities of life of “ordinary” people. Larkin’s poem ‘Here’ is a train journey through Hull, a place which appealed to him as a poet to create the setting of many poems. He liked ‘living on the edge of things,’ and described Hull with ‘its face half-turned towards silence.’ To me ‘Here’ is a poem on observation and an analysis of life by Larkin who seems to refrain from partaking in it himself, like a psychologist.
