Rock and Roll
Rock and Roll is a genre of music that has its seeds of America and quickly spread to the rest of the world.
It developed in the late 1940’s and early 50’s, when the racial tension came to surface.
It had its peak of popularity in the years between 1955 through 1963 but these are only vague boundaries since there have been songs, which would fit in the genre of Rock ‘n’ Roll before, and after this time period.
The term “Rock and Roll” is originally a nautical term, which was used by sailors. It refers to the motions of a ship: rock is the fore and aft motion, roll describes the sideways motion.
It entered the music branch in the 1800’s where it was used in a religious meaning mostly by black gospel singers. They sang songs like “Rock me Lord”, “I Call Jesus my Rock” or “Rockin’ and Rolling in the Arms of Moses”. African Americans also used the word rocking for the rapture they experienced at religious events and to describe the rhythm of the music accompanying those events.
