When I think of blues, I often think of a style of music that was developed decades ago. I imagine artists such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and W.C Handy, all of whom contributed to blues styles today, and many years ago. However, it is extremely noteworthy that today’s blues artists present blues in a more innovative and modern style that differs from blues artists before them. In other words, blues is diverse and cannot be classified as a style of music that is unchanging. This was particularly apparent at JoJo’s Restaurant and Bar in Washington, D.C on November 24, 2007, where a band known as Seal of Approval performed blues in a contemporary and unique manner. In order to explicate this viewpoint, one must consider the environment in which the performance took place.
