Things Fall Apart Chinua Achebe Critical Thinking Essay 2 As I read Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, I find myself looking in on the Ibo’s culture and their way life through the eyes of Okonkwo, who is the son of Unoka. See Okonkwo didn’t like the man his father was and wanted to be better than him. Okonkwo didn’t want to be poor, gently, profligate, or a coward like his father. He wanted to be powerful, have people looking up to him. He wanted to achieve so much more than his father ever had. He adopted ideals that were completely different from his father. By making this change in his life, he did become productive, wealthy, and brave; but he was violent, and didn’t like anything that was considered soft. He didn’t like conversations and anything that had him showing his true emotions. He did achieve great financial and social success that he was looking for, by embracing his new way of life.
