Finding Similarities in Two Short-Stories There are many similarities between Raymond Carver's short-story “Cathedral” and Ernest Hemingway's short-story “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place”. I am not referring to the more obvious such as both stories have three main characters, one of whom tried – and failed – to commit suicide. There are four significant similarities between the stories, some of which stand out more than others. They are: the physical disabilities of two of the main characters, alcohol abuse, four out of the six main characters are insomniacs, and the religious views of the characters – both subtle and not. In “Cathedral”, one of the main characters, Robert, is blind. In “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” one of the main characters is deaf. They both have physical handicaps, or disabilities, that they have had to overcome in life. Although neither of them are limited by this alone.
