The demanding world we live in places multiple pressures upon each and every person. When one tries to cope with these pressures and can not do so, he or she often “snaps” or has drastic emotional transformations. In Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s story “A New England Nun,” Louisa is faced with “falling into the natural drift of girlhood…” (36). During the 1890’s, girls were expected to marry at a young age. Louisa, following the expected path for her life, continually drifts into her commitment without having the permissible choice of returning to shore. Seeing this as an inevitable situation, Louisa’s perfectionist personality creates her meticulous and dainty world, a cage which shields her from the outside world and the people who live in it. Louisa Ellis and Joe Dagget have been bound to their marriage for fifteen years. Because of Joe’s lengthy absence during their commitment to each other, Louisa is given time to root herself into her own consistent blueprint. Peacefully sewing, precisely folding, and delicately pecking creates a picture to what kind of personality Louisa posses......
