Confederation of Canada Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Political Deadlock Each region (Canada West & Canada East) had an equal number of seats on the Legislative Assembly. This made it possible of one group to stop legislation that the other group wanted to pass . Opposing sides would have disagreements over every issue making no head way for either side. There were four parties, two for each province (East and West). For the parties to form a government with a majority, one party had to co-operate in a coalition. Liberal-Conservatives in Canada West and le Parti bleu in Canada East were against the Reform Party and le Parti rouge. Each had a difficult time getting a strong enough majority to pass legislation. This led to Political Deadlock meaning no government could do anything and led to frequent elections. It was 3 or more years before something happened to break Political Deadlock. George Brown an enemy of Sir John A. Macdonald stepped up and announced he was willing to work with his political enemies. This was called the Great Coalition.
