Compare & Contrast: Patrick Henry & Thomas Jefferson Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Both Patrick Henry’s Speech at the Virginia Convention and Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence are significant in our country’s fight for freedom from the King of England. Henry’s work was designed with a plethora of rhetorical questions and biblical/mythological allusions, in addition to an ongoing metaphor on slavery, to be a powerful, emotionally charged speech, intended to persuade the men of the colonies to rebel against England and her King, who had so greatly wronged them. Henry’s speech is in great contrast with Jefferson’s declaration, a written document, meant simply to state the reasons for the colonies’ declaration of freedom from England, which was dry, clean cut, and without rhetorical devices such as allusions, metaphors, and rhetorical questions, which cause readers and listeners to consider the work on a greater emotional level (this is due to the fact it was a government document, and had to remain somewhat impartial).
