I learned a lot about Central India in the nineteenth century from this book and how their history is similar to ours in the United States. I never really studied about South Asia before so reading this book was new and very interesting to me. I learned mainly about ecology, colonialism, and cattle in this book since those were the main focuses. I never knew that the British�s colonial rule was so devastating to the Indian environment. The British ruled India just like they tried to rule America back then. British colonialism created conditions from which there was no escape through resistance. Like the rest of South Asia drought, famine, disease, and death became a banal feature of British rule in this region. In the book it studies the impact of the colonial take-over of forests and grazing lands on land and agriculture, water availability, pasture and grazing lands, manure, fodder, firewood, the condition of soil, and disease epidemics that afflicted cattle.
