The book Behind Barbed Wire describes what happened to Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1941 was a dark day for all American citizens, but especially for those of Japanese ancestry. The surprise bombing on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of the worst time the Nisei, Japanese Americans, would have in America. Their belongings and valued possessions were taken from them. They were also forced to move into Relocation Camps. Being the very honorable people that they were, the Japanese were not only stripped of their way of life, but of their pride and dignity too. Even though they were trapped inside these camps, the Japanese worked hard, and tried to live harmoniously. Through hard work and determination, the Japanese were able to regain their self-esteem and honor. The Relocation Camps Nisei were sent to were in the most desolate and windswept areas of the United States. The camps were situated in very rural and primitive areas that were whipped by the most severe weather.
